You've locked up the lagoon house for the winter, or the decoder sat unused while you were working up country. Now you want it back. A DStv reconnection after a long break is usually quick, but salt air, sand and months of wind can add a few surprises. Here's the order we'd tackle it in.
Quick answer: For a DStv reconnection after months away, pay the full balance first, including any reconnection fee. Then switch the decoder on, leave it on a DStv channel and re-authorise it in the MyDStv app if channels don't return. If the screen shows no signal, the dish or cable needs a technician.
Sort the account before you touch anything
It's tempting to start by fiddling with cables. Don't. If the account isn't active, nothing at the house will bring the picture back.
Sign in to the MyDStv app or dstv.com and look at what's owed. If you suspended the service on purpose, you may only need to restart your package. If it lapsed through missed debit orders, there could be arrears too. Never set the decoder up on your name? Start with our notes on activating a DStv decoder.
Will there be a DStv reconnection fee?
There might be. DStv says a reconnection fee covers the extra admin of processing late payments, and services return once the full amount, fee included, shows on the account. Your account shows the actual figure, so pay the lot in one go.
Wake the decoder up in the right order
Once the payment is through, head to the TV. These steps are safe for anyone:
- Check the plug, the HDMI cable and the white satellite cable at the back of the decoder are pushed in firmly.
- Switch on at the wall and give the decoder a few minutes to start up.
- Tune to a DStv channel and leave it there. Don't keep switching it off.
- If an error shows, re-authorise the decoder through the MyDStv app, DStv's WhatsApp self-service or the "Fix errors" option on dstv.com.
- Open the signal screen in the menu and note the strength and quality.

What months of wind and salt do to a dish
A house that stands empty on the West Coast takes a beating. The summer south-easter pushes hard on a dish, and a bracket that was slightly loose in spring can be pointing at the wrong patch of sky by autumn.
Salt air is the slow killer. It creeps into the F-connectors at the LNB and turns them green. Sand blows into cable joints. Near the water in Mykonos, Club Mykonos and along the lagoon edge, we see this far more often than further inland at Long Acres or Country Club.
Safety first: Please don't go up a ladder or onto the roof to inspect the dish. Look from the garden if you like, but leave the bracket, LNB and wiring to a technician.
If the dish has visibly moved, it needs dish alignment on a meter. Pointing it by eye almost never gets the quality reading high enough.
Reading the screen after your DStv reconnection
Whatever shows on the TV tells you where the problem is. These are the messages we see most after a long break:
| On screen | What it points to | Try this first |
|---|---|---|
| E16 (for example E16-4) | Service not active on the decoder | Confirm the account is paid, then re-authorise in the app |
| E48-32 | No signal reaching the decoder | Check the cable at the back, then call a technician |
| E30-2 | Signal dropping out, often in bad weather | Wait for the weather to clear and try again |
| E51 | Decoder can't read the smartcard | Check the card is in properly and the right way round |
Our post on common DStv error codes goes into more detail on each one.

Tell us what you need or what your screen shows. We give you a clear price before we drive out.
Rentals, estates and new owners
Langebaan homes change hands often. If you've just bought or rented a place, the decoder's smartcard may still be on someone else's account. Paying your own subscription won't help until the card is linked to you.
Estates have their own rules. Some only allow dishes in set positions, and others run a shared system for all units. In that case the fault may be on the complex's equipment, and our communal and complex installations team can look at the whole system. The same goes for some blocks in Saldanha.
Technician tip: Before you leave for a long stretch, take a photo of the signal screen while everything works. When you come back, you'll know at a glance whether the readings have dropped.
When a DStv reconnection needs a technician
Call us in if any of these apply after the account is active:
- The signal screen shows zero strength or quality.
- You see E48-32 in clear, dry weather.
- The dish has moved, the bracket is rusted or the cable is damaged.
- Only some TVs in the house work.
On a visit we test the signal, check every connector and replace what the salt has eaten. Our post on what a technician checks explains the full routine. If the house stands empty for months every year, a DStv maintenance plan can keep the setup in shape between visits.
At the time of writing, a standard single-view installation budgets from around R850 to R1,400 if the gear needs replacing outright. We quote first, so ask our team for a current quote.

DStv reconnection: FAQs
How to reconnect DStv after payment?
Make sure the full amount, including any reconnection fee, shows on your account. Then switch the decoder on and leave it on a DStv channel. If channels don't return, re-authorise it through the MyDStv app, DStv's WhatsApp self-service or dstv.com.
How much is the DStv reconnection fee?
DStv explains that the reconnection fee covers the admin of processing late payments, but its help pages don't publish a fixed amount. The figure you owe shows on your own account in the MyDStv app or on dstv.com, so check there before paying.
Why is my DStv reconnection not working after a long break?
If the account is paid and re-authorising doesn't help, the problem is usually hardware. Months of wind can move a dish, and salt air corrodes connectors. A no-signal reading on the decoder's signal screen means a technician should check the dish and cable.
Can a technician check my Langebaan holiday home while I'm away?
Yes, we can arrange a visit to a Langebaan holiday home if someone can give us access, such as a neighbour, agent or estate office. We test the signal, check the connectors and let you know what we found before you arrive.
Does salt air damage a DStv dish?
Over time, yes. Salt corrodes the bracket, bolts and connectors, especially close to the lagoon and sea. Coastal installs last longer with weatherproofed connectors and good quality brackets, plus a check every so often.
