Owners in Langebaan ask us the same few things about DStv business packages, usually just before the December rush. Here are straight answers, covering lagoon-side guesthouses, bars, shops and small offices, plus what the coast means for the install itself.
Quick answer: DStv business packages are MultiChoice subscriptions for premises that show TV to guests, customers or staff. They're grouped by venue, with options for accommodation, public venues and workplaces, and you pay a monthly fee per TV. You apply to MultiChoice directly, and an installer fits the dish, cabling and screens. A home account isn't allowed in a business.
Who needs a business account instead of a home one?
Any business premises that shows DStv. MultiChoice's brochure says a valid DStv for Business subscriber agreement is the only legal way to show its programming in business premises. That covers guesthouses, restaurants, bars, shops, clinics and offices.
Holiday lets are the grey area in Langebaan. A lock-up-and-go unit in Mykonos let out a few weekends a year isn't the same as a guesthouse with six rooms. If you're unsure, ask MultiChoice which account fits before we install.
Our post on DStv for lagoon-side rentals covers the home-rental side, including what to leave for guests who change every week.
What are the DStv business packages, and how do they differ?
DStv sorts its commercial offer into three groups by the type of venue. The main difference is where each group's channels are allowed to play.
| Group | Made for | Where its channels may play |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | Guesthouses, B&Bs, hotels, retirement villages, clinics | Inside guest rooms only |
| Public viewing | Pubs, restaurants, shops and taverns | Shared areas where people eat, drink or relax |
| Workplace | Offices, schools, banks and receptions | Business offices where people work |
The accommodation and public groups come in more than one tier. The workplace group is the DStv office choice for a reception or staff room. Check the latest channel lists on the DStv Business packages page, as they change.
How much do DStv business packages cost each month?
MultiChoice sets the monthly fee and charges it per TV. So the number of screens matters as much as the tier you choose. We don't quote MultiChoice's rates because they change, so get the current figure when you apply.
The debit order runs on the first day of each month. Billing starts when the service is switched on, which happens after installation is complete.
Decoders are a separate matter from the monthly fee. The business terms say the decoders installed at your premises become yours once they're paid for in full. Each smartcard is matched to its decoder, so keep them together when you move screens around.
Can we show the big match on the deck and charge entry?
You can show it if you're on a package cleared for public viewing. Charging people to watch isn't allowed under the business terms. The DStv for Business brochure lists the other things a venue may not do:
- Put its own adverts, logos or scrolling banners over the picture
- Shrink the channel to fit a promo panel or add its own sound
- Relay the channels to another building or property
- Play in-room accommodation channels in a bar or lounge
The deck is the harder part. The summer south-easter blasts sand and salt off the lagoon, so outdoor screens need sheltered spots and sealed connections. Our TV wall mounting team can suggest places out of the worst of the wind.
Technician tip: Keep the decoder indoors and run the signal out to the patio screen, rather than leaving a decoder outside. Sand and salt get into everything this close to the water.
Who installs the dish for a DStv business package?
The subscription is between you and MultiChoice. The installation is a separate agreement with the installer you choose, and the terms describe installers as independent contractors, not MultiChoice staff.
Need a hand in Langebaan?
Tell us what you need or what your screen shows. We give you a clear price before we drive out.
For a guesthouse near Club Mykonos or a bar in Saldanha, we start with a site visit. We check the view to the north-east, plan the cable routes and give a written quote before any work begins.
Lagoon-front buildings in Myburgh Park and the older parts of town often have the best wall for a dish facing the wrong way. We'd rather spend ten extra minutes finding a clean line to the satellite than leave you with a dish that drops out every time a front comes through.
Decoder per room or one shared system?
The application form offers two installation types: a decoder for each TV, or a head-end system that feeds many screens. Bigger blocks and estates often suit our communal and complex installations.
What about estate rules and salt air?
Many estates around Country Club and Long Acres have rules on where a dish may go, so we check with the body corporate or HOA first. Salt and sand wear out cheap fittings fast, so we use weatherproofed connectors and brackets that cope with coastal air.
A strong south-easter can nudge a badly fixed dish out of line in one afternoon. Our guide to dish alignment on the coast explains why the fixing matters, and a DStv service plan keeps a busy venue checked before peak season.
Safety first: Wind and sand make coastal roofs slippery and unpredictable. Please don't send staff onto the roof to adjust a dish before a big weekend. Leave ladders and roof work to a trained technician.
What if we close for winter or move premises?
Under the DStv for Business terms, an upgrade applies at once, while a downgrade only takes effect at the end of the billing period. Ending the agreement needs thirty days' written notice. Moving or adding premises also has to be reported to MultiChoice in writing.
So plan seasonal changes a month or two ahead. Our post on getting a guesthouse peak-season ready has a timeline for reopening after the quiet months.
What does the installation cost?
Our work is a once-off cost, separate from your DStv business subscription. At the time of writing, a simple single-screen setup budgets from around R850 to R1,400. Multi-room or multi-screen jobs run from around R1,500 to R2,400 or more, so ask our team for a current quote.
- The number of screens and decoders
- Cable length from the dish to the furthest room
- Outdoor or patio screens that need extra weatherproofing
- Roof type, height and access
- Estate approval or after-hours work
Guest WiFi often comes up at the same visit, and we handle WiFi and network installation too.

DStv business packages: FAQs
What channels are on DStv business packages?
It depends on the group and tier. Accommodation packages carry entertainment and movie channels for guest rooms, while public-viewing packages carry channels cleared for bars and restaurants. MultiChoice updates the channel lists, so check the latest one on the DStv Business site.
Can I use DStv business packages at more than one premises?
Only at the premises listed on your application. The DStv for Business terms say you must tell MultiChoice in writing if you want to add new premises or move. Each site also needs its own installation and decoders.
Do you install DStv for businesses in Langebaan and Saldanha?
Yes. We work with guesthouses, restaurants, shops and offices in Langebaan, Saldanha, Club Mykonos, Paternoster and nearby. We visit first, check the dish position and estate rules, and give you a written quote.
Can a holiday rental use a normal DStv subscription?
A private holiday home is usually on a home account. Once you run it as a business with paying guests in rooms, the accommodation group is meant for that. If you're not sure where your rental fits, ask MultiChoice before you set it up.
Does MultiChoice check how many TVs a business has?
It can. The terms allow MultiChoice to inspect premises during reasonable hours to check the number of screens or rooms. If the count is higher than declared, it may charge the difference, so declare every TV from the start.
