What Is Included in an OpenView Installer Quote?

Two quotes for the same job can look miles apart, and it's usually because they don't cover the same things. A proper OpenView installer quote should list every part and every bit of labour, so you can see what you're paying for. Here's what belongs on one, what tends to cost extra, and what changes the figure in Langebaan.

Quick answer: A complete OpenView installer quote covers the dish, LNB, bracket, cable, connectors, weatherproofing, alignment with a signal meter, decoder setup, help with activation and a final channel test. The decoder may or may not be included. Extra TV points, long cable runs, wall mounting, travel and after-hours work are usually priced on top.

The core of an OpenView installer quote

OpenView, which belongs to eMedia, doesn't charge a subscription or tie you to a contract. So the install is the main cost you'll ever pay. That makes it worth reading the quote line by line before you say yes.

A standard job should include all of these:

  • Satellite dish, ideally around 80 to 85cm for OpenView
  • LNB fitted to the dish arm
  • Wall or roof bracket with fixings
  • Coaxial cable from the dish to the decoder
  • Connectors, with the outdoor ones weatherproofed
  • Dish alignment on a signal meter
  • Decoder setup, channel scan and help with activation
  • A test of every channel with you before the installer leaves

If any of these are missing, ask why. Our OpenView OVHD installation page lists the same items, so you can hold any quote up against it.

Line by line: what each item means

Some of these items sound technical, but each one matters for how long your picture lasts. This table shows what to look for under each line.

Quote lineNormally included?What to check
Dish and LNBYes, unless you're reusing oneDish size and whether the LNB is new
Bracket and fixingsYesRust-resistant bolts, solid wall
CableYes, up to a set lengthHow many metres before extra cable is charged
WeatherproofingShould beSealed outdoor connectors and a drip loop
AlignmentYesSignal meter used, readings shown on screen
DecoderSometimesWhether the box is in the price or bought by you
Setup and activation helpYesChannels scanned and tested in front of you
Call-out or travelVariesWhether it's a separate line

Alignment deserves a word. The OpenView signal is beamed from 68.5 degrees East on Intelsat 20, which is where DStv sits too. Our post on why dish position matters on the coast explains what a few degrees can do.

What usually costs extra on top

None of these extras are a trick. They're simply work that not every house needs, so a fair installer prices them separately. Ask about each one so the final invoice doesn't surprise you.

  • Extra cable beyond the standard length, often charged per metre
  • A second or third TV point in another room
  • Mounting the TV on the wall and hiding the cable
  • Travel further out, for example to Paternoster or Saldanha
  • After-hours or weekend work
  • Replacing rusted parts on an old dish you want to keep

If you'd like the TV off the cabinet, combining the dish with TV wall mounting on one visit usually costs less than two separate call-outs.

How the OpenView installation price is built up

When we wrote this, OpenView's online shop had its Wi-Fi decoder at R799, and some shops had it on special from roughly R599. Add a voucher for the dish and fitting, and the bundle sits around R1,699. Prices change, so check on the day.

Bundles with an installation voucher

The bundle is simple: one price for the box, the dish and the fitting. Before you buy, ask the seller what the voucher covers, how the installation gets booked, and whether travel or extra cable is added for your area. That way you know what the OpenView installation voucher really covers at your house.

Decoder bought separately

If you already have the box, the quote covers the OpenView decoder and dish installation work only. Here the openview installation price depends mostly on whether you need a new dish, how long the cable run is, and how easy the roof is to work on. Ask us for a current quote.

Langebaan conditions that change the quote

The lagoon is beautiful, but it's tough on outdoor gear. The summer south-easter loads a dish like a sail, and salt air and blown sand wear down cheap brackets and connectors. A quote for a house in Langebaan should allow for stronger fixings and proper sealing.

Security estates add another layer. In places like Myburgh Park, Club Mykonos and Country Club, there may be rules on where a dish can go and how it must look. A careful installer asks first and quotes for the approved spot, even if it needs a longer cable.

Good to know: Lock-up-and-go units and rentals often change hands. If you're installing for tenants or guests, ask for a quote that includes a quick handover note with the channel rescan steps. Our post on lagoon-side holiday rentals has more tips for let homes.

Reusing a dish that's already on the wall

OpenView and DStv point at one satellite, so the dish you already have might do the job. That can take the dish off the quote, but it should add an inspection. The installer needs to check the LNB, bracket and cable for salt damage before relying on them.

If the old dish just needs pointing again, it may only be a dish installation and alignment job. If it sits on a shared block system, you'll need someone who knows complex and estate systems to check it first.

Five questions to ask before you accept an OpenView installer quote

  1. Is the decoder in this price, or am I buying it myself?
  2. How many metres of cable are included, and what does extra cost?
  3. What are the bracket and bolts made of?
  4. Will you show me the signal readings and test every channel?
  5. When do I pay, and what happens if the dish moves after a windy week?

You'll switch the decoder on with its details via the OpenView website, a WhatsApp chat or the app. A good installer helps you through it before leaving.

Safety first: Leave roof and ladder work to the installer, especially when the south-easter is pumping. Don't try to check the dish arm or LNB yourself.

OpenView installer: FAQs

What does an OpenView installer quote usually include?

It should cover the dish, LNB, bracket, cable, weatherproofed connectors, alignment with a signal meter, decoder setup, help with activation and a channel test. The decoder itself may or may not be included, so check that line. Extra rooms, long cable runs and wall mounting are usually extra.

How much is OpenView installation in Langebaan?

Expect around R1,699 for a decoder and voucher bundle at the time of writing, or R799 for the box alone from OpenView's site. Estate rules, stronger coastal fixings or a longer cable run can change the figure. Send us a few details and we'll quote properly.

Why is my OpenView installer quote higher than the decoder price?

The decoder price covers only the box. The quote adds the dish, LNB, bracket, cable, fittings and the labour to align and test it all. On the coast, rust-resistant fixings and proper sealing also add a little, but they save on call-backs.

What does the OpenView installation voucher cover?

The voucher is sold with the decoder and covers the dish and the installation. Before buying, ask the seller how the installation is booked in your area and whether travel or extra cable is charged on top. Terms can change, so confirm on the day.

Do I need a new dish for OpenView?

Not always. Your current DStv dish looks at the same satellite, so it may well work for OpenView too. The installer should check the LNB, bracket and cable first, because salt air and sand can damage parts that look fine from the ground.
